Meryl Streep - Vogue December 2017

Meryl Streep has filed a trademark application for use of her name. The American actress, 68, filed a $275 trademark application to protect her name for “entertainment services, namely, live, televised, and movie appearances by a professional actress and entertainer” on January 22, according to US Patent and Trademark Office records obtained by the New York Post (via the BBC).

She joins the ranks of other celebrities who have filed to trademark their name: Sean Connery, the Beckham family, Jay Z and Beyoncé’s kids, Paris Hilton and 50 Cent, who sued Taco Bell for using his moniker without permission. (Others, such as the web-famous feline Grumpy Cat, just trademark their image.)

Streep’s name will also be protected for “personal appearances, speaking engagements; autograph signings” and “providing a website featuring content in the field of motion pictures.” The U.S. copyright will act as a legal protection so that nobody can use her name to sell anything entertainment-related.

Streep’s move comes just days HBO announced that she is set to join the Big Little Lies cast for its second season. She will play Mary Louise (her actual name), the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s character in the show. She is currently starring in Steven Spielberg’s The Post and has fans worried about her character’s fate in Mamma Mia 2, in theaters this summer.
