Intel x IOC Olympics

Not wasting any time in the wake of McDonald’s exiting its longstanding Olympics sponsorship, the International Olympics Committee has announced a new type of partnership with another big name in American and global business: Intel.

Intel will join the TOP (an acronym for “The Olympic Partner” program) Olympic partner team.

In addition to a love of sports, the deal promotes Intel’s leading technology to enhance enjoyment of the Games, primarily using its 5G platforms, virtual reality, 3D and 360-degree content platforms, artificial intelligence and even drones to enhance the games.

Meanwhile, the Games will offer an unparalleled global platform to showcase what Intel technology can do to transform the future of sports.

The deal will begin with an activation at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next year, where Intel technology will provide real-time VR viewing of the games. This will “provide fans the opportunity for a more immersive viewing experience from their own homes,” the companies said in a press release.

And remember Intel’s drones at Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show? Intel drone light-show technology “will create never-seen-before images” in the sky as the deal goes on.

Intel 360 replay technology will give fans a repeat of memorable Olympic moments from every angle. And TV viewers at home will get “front-row seat” experiences or be able to choose from many different vantage points in Olympic venues.

“The power to choose what they want to see and how they want to experience the Olympic Games will be in the hands of the fans,” the companies said.

“We are excited to join the Olympic Movement and integrate Intel’s innovative technologies to advance the Olympic Games experience for fans around the world,” said Brian Krzanich, Intel’s CEO. “Through this close collaboration with the Olympic family, we will accelerate the adoption of technology for the future of sports on the world’s largest athletic stage.”
