Now in its 10th year, the Beazley Designs of the Year exhibition is now open for visitors to The Design Museum in London to view through January 28th.
From Yeezy’s Life of Pablo tour merchandise and the Google x Levi’s smart jean jacket to the women’s protest pussyhat, Pokemon Go and the Nike hijab, branded inspiration is evident across the 60 global projects in six categories that celebrate the best in design of the year. The exhibition and awards capture the breadth and variety of recent innovations in Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product and Transport.

This year’s exhibition includes film, virtual reality, audio and objects nominated by academics, critics and designers, with each project recognized for its outstanding contribution to the spirit of the times, and the public vote is now open and a jury of industry experts will decide on the award winners in January 2018.
Why it’s a must-see? “From the brilliant to the brutal (it’s) a glimpse into what the world of tomorrow may look like,” as The Times commented.

Talks will illuminate the exhibition, including conversations with Deyan Sudjic, co-director of the Design Museum; Glenn Adamson, guest curator of Beazley Designs of the Year; Marcus Fairs, editor-in-chief of Dezeen; Farshid Moussavi, director of Farshid Moussavi Architects. A hot topic will be the overall winner for 2017, with IKEA’s Better Shelter for refugees earning that distinction last year.
This year’s exhibition includes:
Architecture: New buildings, including Serpentine Pavilion designer Francis Kéré’s Lycée Schorge Secondary School, built from locally sourced materials.
Digital: A wide-ranging category featuring a text message service for refugees and a global sensation Pokémon Go.
Fashion: A wide range of themes, from the social justice craftivist movement to upcycled fashion and celebrity fashion, with Levi’s smart denim jacket with Google, the Pussyhat Project that took over women’s marches worldwide, Nike’s hijab for Muslim women athletes and Kanye West’s Life of Pablo tour merch on display.
Graphics: A year of political unrest has proven to be a strong theme for this category, including Air Ink by Graviky Labs and the creation of a Refugee Nation Flag designed for the first ever Olympic refugee team.
Product: Check out Gita, a personal robotic sherpa by Piaggio Fast Forward, and a craft beer inspired by the experience of African immigrants living in Europe.
Transport: Transport designs that explore self-driving, electric and energy efficient models and even a 3D printed bus.
As the Design Museum notes, “Activism and protest has proven to be a strong theme across many of the categories. See the original Pussyhat, symbolising women’s solidarity in protest of President Donald Trump’s sexist remarks and the Refugee Nation Flag, created to represent stateless athletes at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
