Microsoft released its 2017 holiday spot yesterday:

3D Holiday tells the story of a young girl who goes on an imaginary adventure through space where she and “Gabe the Yeti” encounter various characters who need a little love and support, culminating in a celebration for all.
When we are inclusive and celebrate our differences we can make the world a better place. The holiday season is a time for community and inclusion—a time for celebrating and embracing each other’s differences and forming friendships that inspire us all to make the world a better place.
Follow Sasha and Gabe the Yeti on an imaginary 3D adventure through space where they encounter various characters who need a little love and support, culminating in a holiday celebration for all.
In this ad we show Paint 3D, a creativity app available on all Windows 10 PCs. We also feature Remix 3D, a community site for sharing and evolving creations; the majority of the characters in the ad were inspired by those available on Remix 3D. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella commented about the creativity-promoting spot, “The real question that needs to be asked as well as answered is what is it that we can do that is unique, that is impactful?”
“The holiday season is a time for community, inclusion—and imagination,” Kathleen Hall, Microsoft’s corporate vp of brand, advertising and research, told Adweek. “Our goal was to bring all of those together and invite people to join us in creating a kinder, more inclusive world through the power and magic of 3D.”
Microsoft is positioning Paint 3D and its Remix 3D website as a community for people to share their creations. Remix 3D lets anyone share a 3D character, or download one that someone else has made and tweak it. Paint 3D fully supports 3D models, and you can even move creations over to Windows Mixed Reality to truly experience them in 3D with a VR headset, as the companion tutorial below demonstrates:
Microsoft’s Surface Book makes a cameo at the beginning and end of the spot, and as The Verge notes, “Gabe the Yeti was created in Microsoft’s new version of Paint in a year when everyone was worried Microsoft would kill off the original MS Paint app, the company is celebrating its biggest ever update to the classic app with a cute TV commercial.”
The cast of holiday characters in the spot and the Paint 3D app:
Gabe (Yeti): A gentle giant who just wants everyone to be happy. His friends wouldn’t change a thing about him because he gives the best hugs.
Terrance (Terry): A 3-eyed monster who has been teased. He enjoys helping others like him find their place in the world.
Hermin the Ermine: Not your typical pirate. He doesn’t like to be mean and would much rather share his treasure than steal someone else’s.
Zed the Lizard: Incredibly generous, he goes out of his way to lend a helping hand – literally. He would give away his last leg for someone in need.
Ami (Origami Pig): An active volunteer in her community. She is always getting out and trying to make a difference.
Saul the Snowman: A big fan of music and expressing himself. He cares deeply about people and wants to spread harmony throughout the world.
