Hyundai next-generation fuel cell model

Hyundai is getting ready to reveal its vision—in the case of its own smart glasses, literally—of mobility and driving during its press conference at CES 2018.

During its press event on Monday, Hyundai will debut a next generation hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicle with autonomous features. The next-generation FCEV model and its name will both be unveiled while Hyundai showcases its ideas for hydrogen-powered life beyond transportation.

Hyundai Motor Company took a major step towards equipping future connected vehicles with the voice recognition technology necessary to keep pace with growing, real-time data needs of drivers. Hyundai’s “Intelligent Personal Agent,” a voice-enabled virtual assistant system, will be deployed in new models set to roll out as early as 2019

It’s also planning to unveil a voice-activated driving assistant, an “Intelligent Personal Agent” that will be rolled out in new Hyundai models next year, a feature that “will look to bridge the gap between smartphone connectivity and the ability to operate vehicle features.”

“Sophisticated voice recognition and AI integration are core to effectively providing drivers with the massive content and data that future connected vehicles have to offer,” Paul Choo, Hyundai’s director of infotainment, stated in a press release.

The Intelligent Personal Agent will set itself apart with its “multiple-command recognition” function including vital sign-based wellness care. “When the user says, ‘Tell me what the weather will be like tomorrow and turn off the lights in our living room,’ the system recognises two separate commands in the same sentence and completes each task separately.”

The concept’s voice recognition software is based on an artificial intelligence and conversational intelligence platform developed by Silicon Valley-based startup SoundHound. Once activated, the software relays the driver’s voice commands or questions to SoundHound’s AI server to search for the requested information.

Also at CES, Hyundai’s Innocean in-house agency will demonstrate Glatus, smart driving sunglasses developed in-house, along with another variant “designed to automatically alter the intensity of illumination that’s hitting the wearer’s eyes.”

Separately, Hyundai and Volkswagen are partnering with Aurora Innovation for driverless cars, marking a key collaboration with former Google self-driving car wiz Chris Urmson, the CEO of Aurora.

Hyundai’s CES press conference will take place at Mandalay Bay (Level 2, Oceanside C) at 3:00 p.m. PST on Monday, January 8 and will be livestreamed. At the press conference, Urmson will join Hyundai executives to discuss details on the joint research and development of autonomous driving technology.
