Johnson Controls - GLAS thermostat

Johnson Controls’ GLAS is the first smart thermostat of its kind to use a translucent OLED touchscreen display to control functionality. Leveraging 135-plus years of acumen and insight in building control systems, GLAS epitomizes the cutting edge of efficiency and smart tech from the company that invented the room thermostat.

GLAS tracks and assesses multiple aspects of air quality as users merely touch the screen to change the temperature, monitor indoor and outdoor air quality and track energy savings.

GLAS can also be controlled by app or by voice, using Microsoft’s voice-enabled digital assistant, Cortana. Besides being at CES 2018 this week, the product will be available for pre-order in March for $319.

“Developing GLAS really allowed our team to think outside of the box, understand consumers and create a customer-backed design that is both beautiful in form and also very functional,” stated Don Albinger, VP/GM building automation systems, Johnson Controls.

“We wanted to take our experience of designing thermostats for industrial applications and enhance the features, function and user interface of the thermostat to create a more efficient and innovative way to control a space.”

In addition to temperature, GLAS tracks humidity, total volatile organic compounds (tVOC) and equivalent carbon dioxide (eCO2) inside a home or building, and when internet-connected, monitors tree, grass and ragweed pollen count; ultraviolet (UV) index; and air quality index (AQI)—including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone levels.

If air quality falls below moderate levels, GLAS can activate a fan or ventilation equipment. A user can choose preferences for Home, Away and Sleeping and GLAS saves energy by detecting if a home is occupied or not and automatically adjust its settings.

GLAS utilizes the Azure IoT cloud platform and Windows 10 IoT Core and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410E embedded platform that combines quad-core processing capability, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s also adaptable to a wide range of installations, including commercial buildings.
