Twitter CEO announces political ads ban

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has announced the social media network will ban all political advertising from 22 November 2019.

The move comes as Facebook ruled out the political ads ban, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying, “In a democracy, I don’t think it’s right for private companies to censor politicians or the news.”

The ban will mean that globally electioneering advertising and adverts related to political issues will be banned, though people will still see ads encouraging them to vote.

Dorsey says: “This isn’t about free expression”, adding that: “This is about paying for reach. And paying to increase the reach of political speech has significant ramifications that today’s democratic infrastructure may not be prepared to handle. It’s worth stepping back in order to address.”

He continued: “While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics.”
