The key to an event is the ticket, but it’s an innovation that hasn’t changed in 30 years. Current technologies have significant hardware limitations and cost, leading to fraud and poor attendee data.
Now Ticketmaster and LISNR are replacing the paper ticket, NFC and QR codes by using audio tones to identify and authenticate ticket-holders. The goal: making standing in line for festivals and concerts in order to tickets physically scanned become a thing of the past as Ticketmaster launches Presence, the name of its digital e-ticketing system with LISNR, a data-over-audio startup.
Ticketmaster has been slowly rolling out Presence to venues, replacing paper tickets with digital passes that use a range of proximity-based technology including NFC, RFID, and audio. Presence is currently installed at 32 North American venues, and the ticketing giant expects a full global rollout over the next four years.
LISNR is an ultrasonic, inaudible communication protocol that transmits customizable packets of data every second and enables device connectivity everywhere. Its pioneering ultrasonic sound technology uses Smart Tone technology to transmit information between devices.

Users just open the Presence app on their phone to broadcast ticket data by phone to special microphones pre-installed at the event. Audio signals emitted by the app at between 18.75 khz and 19.2 khz transmit their ticket info, and speed up identifying and authenticating legit ticket-holders. Once validated, in they go to the event.
“We used identity as our north star — our guiding light to develop a product that makes each individual fan experience the greatest it could be,” said Justin Burleigh, EVP of product at Ticketmaster.
“This means using identity to drive customized experiences based on who you are and where you are, eliminating fraud, resulting in a safer environment, and delivering more personalization based on the specific event you’re attending.”
As Burleigh told Mashable, “venues and content owners can now connect directly the next few years, so you could be whizzing into venues like a pro before you know it, to someone attending an event to foster personalized fan engagement, simplify the ticket management experience, protect against fraud, and enhance security.”
Presence is built on proximity-based digital technology like NFC and RFID and replaces manually scanning a QR code or barcode from a paper ticket, instead verifying a mobile ticket and ID and showing a green approved screen on users’ phones.
As Ticketmaster’s developers site outlines, “The Ticketmaster Presence API allows you to validate tickets and manage scanning devices for Ticketmaster events… Check the validity of ticket and mark it as entered, exited or secondary scanned at an event.”

The Ticketmaster/Lisnr partnership will reduce ticket fraud, bots and scalpers while enabling brands and venues to garner geo-location data and target users with personalized messages. Future plans include shopping capability so users can buy food and drink from their seats, or even merchandise.
Ticketing isn’t the only use case for LISNR, which is also powering connected cars (among other applications). It’s partnering with Jaguar Land Rover in a test to enable vehicles to communicate with mobile devices, other cars and potentially the broader environment here Smart Tone technology is enabled.
This could be used to replace a key fob with a smartphone to unlock the door or to personalize seat settings, including placement and climate control— the better to get to the stadium or arena to enjoy a paperless ticketed event.
