Qualcomm wants to make cars not only smarter, but safer and more entertaining. At its CES 2018 press conference on Monday, Qualcomm announced partnerships with Jaguar, Land Rover, Honda and China’s BYD electric car-maker to bring Snapdragon infotainment to their vehicles.

The vehicles—and their drivers—will benefit from advanced connectivity with state-of-the-art Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, meaning “ultra-quick, reliable and efficient internet, limitless in-car entertainment and over-the-air downloads.”

In voice-enabled products, the San Diego, Calif.-based Qualcomm is providing technology platforms for Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortina and Google’s Assistant.

As tech analyst Patrick Moorhead tweeted Monday, “Qualcomm’s voice platform supports EVERY platform I’m aware of. One physical design, every platform: Alibaba, Amazon, Baidu, Google, Cortana. Saves OEM and ODM money.”

Lenovo’s Snapdragon-powered Miix630 PC with Windows 10 and the voice-activated Lenovo Smart Display with Google Assistant built-in that’s powered by the Qualcomm Home Hub Platform.

Snapdragon is also powering the all-in-one Oculus One VR headset, for which Xiaomi is Facebook’s global launch partner; they’re also building a China-specific model.

In other news from the company that “invents the tech the world loves,” Qualcomm is also helping bring 5G to mobile devices. Qualcomm‘s president Cristiano Amon says the brand is developing 5G technology that will show up in a smartphone by next year.

Amon told reporters and analysts at CES on Monday that 5G will be available “earlier than anybody thought. We’re going to get 5G in a smartphone by 2019.”

New segments like automotive and the Internet of Things could be worth billions of dollars to its business in the very near future.
