Qualcomm wants to make cars not only smarter, but safer and more entertaining. At its CES 2018 press conference on Monday, Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon announced partnerships with Jaguar, Land Rover, Honda and China’s BYD electric car-maker to bring Snapdragon infotainment to their vehicles.
The vehicles—and their drivers—will benefit from advanced connectivity with state-of-the-art Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, meaning “ultra-quick, reliable and efficient internet, limitless in-car entertainment and over-the-air downloads.”

In voice-enabled products, the San Diego, Calif.-based Qualcomm is providing technology platforms for Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortina and Google’s Assistant.
As tech analyst Patrick Moorhead tweeted Monday, “Qualcomm’s voice platform supports EVERY platform I’m aware of. One physical design, every platform: Alibaba, Amazon, Baidu, Google, Cortana. Saves OEM and ODM money.”

Lenovo’s Snapdragon-powered Miix630 PC with Windows 10 and the voice-activated Lenovo Smart Display with Google Assistant built-in that’s powered by the Qualcomm Home Hub Platform.

Snapdragon is also powering the all-in-one Oculus One VR headset, for which Xiaomi is the global launch partner. There will also be a China-specific model.

In other news from the company that “invents the tech the world loves,” Qualcomm is also helping bring 5G to mobile devices. Amon said at CES on Monday that the company is developing 5G technology that will show up in a smartphone by next year.

Amon told reporters and analysts at CES on Monday that 5G will be available “earlier than anybody thought. We’re going to get 5G in a smartphone by 2019.”
Qualcomm, which is also bringing a new logo and visual identity to CES 2018, is poised for growth through new opportunities and partners. “We have been spending time over the past two years to diversity our company,” Amon said. New segments like automotive and the Internet of Things could be worth billions of dollars to its business in the very near future.
